What is port collection?

Ports of call, as lofty as it sounds, is actually an important part of international freight forwarding. Simply put, it is to concentrate the goods from different locations to one port or terminal, and then load them onto the same ship for transport. This operation not only improves transport efficiency, but also reduces the number of times a ship calls at multiple ports, saving time and cost.

How do containers consolidate in ports?

Cargo consolidation: Cargo is transported to the wharf or warehouse in the port of collection by land or railway.

Loading and unloading operations: At the port of collection, cargo is loaded and unloaded, transferred from land vehicles to containers, or unloaded from containers.

Sorting and Classification: Containers are sorted and classified by the staff at the port of embarkation according to the shipping schedule and the destination of the cargo to ensure that they are in order of destination when loaded on board the vessel.

Loading: When the cargo is ready, the containers are loaded onto the waiting vessel ready for the next leg of the sea journey.

Who is responsible for the port of collection?

Port Authorities: Responsible for coordinating and organising the port collection, arranging for the reception, loading, unloading, sorting and loading of the cargo.

Freight forwarder: may be involved in the port collection, responsible for coordinating the cargo transport arrangements and communicating with the port authority.

Shipping company: Provides the capacity of the ship and coordinates with port authorities and partners such as freight forwarders to ensure the smooth transport of goods.

Port collection is an indispensable part of international freight transport, which integrates cargo transport resources, improves transport efficiency and facilitates global cargo flow.
